Menjangan Island

Pulau Menjangan
Menjangan is an uninhabited 175-hectare coral island off Bali's northwest tip, part of the West Bali National Park in Buleleng Regency. From a helicopter, on the outbound leg of the Ijen route, you see what the dive boats only experience in fragments — the full island, its fringing reef, and the dramatic blue-water dropoff in one composition.
The place

What is Menjangan Island

*Pulau Menjangan* means "Deer Island" — named for the small population of Java rusa deer that swim across the shallow channel from the Bali mainland during the dry season and graze on the island's coastal grasslands. The deer are why this section of West Bali, plus Menjangan itself, was declared a national park in 1941; the larger **Taman Nasional Bali Barat** now protects 19,000 hectares of mainland forest, savanna, mangroves, and coral reefs, with Menjangan as its most-protected zone.
The island is a raised limestone platform — a former coral reef that emerged from the sea when sea levels dropped, then was recolonised by terrestrial vegetation. Its shores fall away in a near-vertical underwater wall that drops sixty metres into clear water within metres of the beach, which is what makes Menjangan one of Indonesia's premier wall-diving sites. The dive sites — Anchor Wreck, Eel Garden, Pos II, Sandy Slope — are familiar to anyone who has dived this part of the Coral Triangle.
There is no permanent human population. A small temple complex, **Pura Gili Kencana**, sits on the eastern tip and is a pilgrimage destination for Hindus from the West Bali mainland. Day visitors come by *jukung* boat from Banyuwedang or Labuhan Lalang on the mainland; the island has no hotels, no roads, no electricity grid.

From the air

The helicopter approach to Menjangan is the only way to see the island's geological structure at full scale. From a boat you see one shore at a time; from above the entire coral platform, fringing reef, and dropoff are in one frame.
